Giant Robber Fly (Promachus hinei)

Spotted this giant robber fly on the ground initially, but i spooked it while sitting up the support. It flew and perched on a dried and rolled-up Carolyn Whorton Caladium or an “elephant ear”. Perfect! with it higher off the ground, i can get rid off cluster background while stepping the aperture all the way to F16.

This is the biggest robber fly i’ve ever seen, about an inch long, or longer. This species can take down dragonfly or butterfly twice their size on air! It took off again shortly i took this picture, so didn’t get the chance to pull the MPE-65mm on it.
